Sunny Rose Healey, Certified Ayurvedic Practitioner
Sunny's experience of holistic health and healing began with the need to heal herself from digestive disturbances, headaches, and physical pain stemming from injury. She believes the best way to learn is through self discovery.
Sunny began supporting the health and healing of others through teaching therapeutic yoga āsana. In 1999 she co-founded Soma Yoga in Salt Lake City, a busy yoga center that offered several styles of yoga as well as a Yoga Alliance Certified teacher training.
In 2006 Sunny began studies at the Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque where she studied under Dr. Vasant Lad and his senior teachers, graduating as a Certified Ayurvedic Practitioner in 2009. Subsequently, she was asked to join the faculty at the Ayurvedic Institute where she taught Ayurvedic medicine for 9 years and managed the advanced student clinic for 3.
Sunny has been trained in Marma therapy by Dr. Lad. and is certified in Jin Shin Jyutsu (an ancient Japanese hands-on body/energy medicine). She uses both hands-on modalities in her practice where appropriate.
As an herbalist, Sunny has over a decade of study in clinical herbalism including Ayurvedic & western herbs.
She has an herbal apothecary line called Mamāyurveda Medicinals, with products available here at Mountain Spirit to support your wellness goals.
About Sunny’s Complimentary Perinatal Offerings:
In 2011, when Sunny became pregnant with her first baby, she searched for an opportunity to work with Ayurveda through pregnancy and postpartum. There was very little information and support in this realm from an Ayurvedic perspective, and after birthing her daughter at home and experiencing a supported Ayurvedic style postpartum, she was inspired to gather some of these ancient ways and bring them to a wider group of women. She is co-author of the self published book 40 Days for 40 Years: A Postpartum Guide and Cookbook.
Sunny studied holistic midwifery with Whapio of La Matrona and apprenticed locally in midwifery over a 2 year period. Her training in midwifery and knowledge of Ayurvedic pregnancy care allows her to be complementary to a woman’s primary pregnancy healthcare specialist (OB/GYN and/or Licensed Midwife). During pregnancy, Sunny can provide support with nutrition, lifestyle factors and easing of discomforts during pregnancy. This type of support leads to healthier moms and babies and lends extra support to the process of navigating pregnancy.
Sunny has helped many women prepare for conception through her unique method of preconception care that is rooted in Ayurveda. She calls this the Bīja method. The foundation of the Bija method involves setting aside 4 months or more to prepare for conception in a specific way, that includes cleansing, specialized nutrient support and specialized diet. It is ideal if both partners take part, however the person who will become pregnant can follow this program alone with great benefit. This program or portions of this program can be of benefit also, when IVF or IUI will be involved.
Who Does Sunny See?
Sunny sees clients/patients ages 7 older. For moms with new babies under 3 months, Sunny can see you together for a combined postpartum visit.
Although Sunny specializes in women’s medicine, she works with men, women, transgender and non binary individuals. What a typical initial session involves: In your initial visit with Sunny, she will go over your health history questionnaire in-depth and ask you additional questions. She will usually look at your tongue and feel your pulses in your wrists in order to understand your unique constitution and current state of imbalance. Dietary modifications will usually be given. Often, herbal and/or nutrient recommendations will be given, depending on the plan you and Sunny create (this depends on what you are currently taking and other factors). Sunny will discuss with you what she is recommending to make sure the plan is doable for you.
Most, if not all of the session will be a seated discussion with Sunny where she will work to find the root causes of imbalance and develop together with you a plan of action, however, Sunny will meet you where you are - if you are unable to sit and create a plan with Sunny at the time of your appointment, she may elect to do hands-on work with you instead.
After the session you’ll receive an email with a brief outline of your plan so there will be no confusion as to the recommendations. Generally, followup is recommended every 2-6 weeks.
What a typical followup session involves:
At your followup Sunny will ask how you’re doing with the recommendations given at the previous session and offer new tools to move you forward in your journey to feeling well. Most followup sessions will also include a short hands-on treatment designed to relieve stress and support integration.
